AdventThe season of Advent is the time leading up to Christmas when we look back and celebrate Jesus Christ’s birth while looking forward to when He will come again.
We look back and think about God’s people and how they yearned for a Messiah to save them — to claim His rightful place of authority and make things right again. When He came, it looked nothing like they were expecting. He began to change people from the inside out — transforming people’s hearts so their wills, desires, attitudes and actions began to look more and more like His. As his followers lived out Jesus’ way, obeying God, caring for their neighbors, and looking out for one another, they began impacting their culture. While the transformation is started, there’s so far to go. Like the God’s people back then, we look around and see hopelessness, hurt, destruction, evil, and injustice, and our hearts cry out, “Come quickly, Lord Jesus!” We cling to His promise that He is coming again to complete His work of making all things whole, new and good. The Daily ChallengeAs we journey through the advent season, we challenge you to join us here daily in reading and meditating on one chapter of Luke each day.
The Gospel-writer Luke gives us a unique perspective into the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. He is the only gentile (non-Jewish person) to write books of the Bible — this Gospel According to Luke and the Acts of the Apostles — which he wrote for a non-Jewish audience, the Greeks in Asia Minor. He traveled with Paul sharing the Good News that Jesus is alive and reigns as King in God’s Kingdom. His point is clear: Jesus invites everyone to connect with God and live in His Kingdom, including people who had traditionally been on the outside looking in: the poor, the marginalized and people who had been cast out because of their sin. Luke clearly tells us Jesus is King — the Messiah — and that God’s Kingdom is an upside down kingdom. Our prayer is that as we look at Jesus’s life and ministry, God will give us a better awareness and understanding of his upside kingdom and transform our hearts as we follow Jesus, obeying what he taught. |
